Career Decisions

Year 10

Year 10 is the first year that you have the ability to choose subjects that may ultimately influence what you study for the next few years, as well as what options are available to you after school.

At this stage you may already have a clear picture of what you want to do, or a few different ideas. Alternatively, you may not have seriously considered a career direction before.

Rather than choosing subjects blindly, there is information available to help you get more of an idea of what you want to do, what opportunities are available and what you may need to study now to put yourself in a better position to make decisions later on.

If you have a career in mind that seems right for you, you may need to work backwards by finding out later requirements (e.g. the Year 12 subjects needed to get into a university course) and therefore the subjects that you should choose now. Useful sources of information include:

  • Parents and other family members
  • Teachers
  • Friends and their family members
  • Mentors, professional associations or people who know you well
  • Internet sites
  • Career Advisors
