Career Decisions

Finding Out About Yourself

Half-way through secondary school you find yourself being asked to choose subjects.

These decisions tend to lead to certain types of study and work therefore they can influence your career direction and ultimately your whole life.

Your career success is likely to be dramatically increased by:

  • having a clear understanding of what you want and what you have to offer
  • knowing job market trends and industry needs
  • making decisions and setting goals
  • being focussed on achieving your goals

We recommend that you start to think carefully about your job preferences now!

You may not be ready to work out exactly what you will be doing in the future but you should develop some idea of what types of work would be appropriate for you.

Invest some time and effort NOW into creating your future - later you will be glad that you did.

You need a clear sense of direction. Too often, job preferences are based upon limited or inaccurate knowledge.

Planning your career direction involves 4 main stages:

  1. Self Assessment - Understanding who you are
  2. Exploring Options - Gathering information about work and study appropriate to you
  3. Planning - Identifying goals and the steps required to get there
  4. Taking Action - First steps taken to achieve your objectives
